Top 5 Hotel Picks for Newport, Rhode Island
I love fall in New England and Newport is no exception. The weather is cooler, the crowds have thinned out, and now is the time to enjoy the salty air in a cozy sweater with a pumpkin mudslide in your hand. I’ll be doing a series of Newport posts (I am currently based in Newport so I have A LOT of info to share!) including things to do and where to eat, but for now let’s talk hotels.
Newport is relatively small and most of the hotels are located in the downtown area. They range from quaint bed and breakfasts to larger properties that are newly renovated with amenities so there is something for everyone. I’ve narrowed it down to 5 places that I’ve had excellent experiences with.
The Brenton Hotel
Who it’s for: Anyone who wants to be in a walkable location in a brand new boutique hotel. Also ideal for those who like ice cream sandwiches because there is a freezer full of them on every floor.
Pro Tip: The two bedroom suite is perfect for families or friends traveling together (highly recommended for bachelor/bachelorette parties because they are strategically located at the end of each hallway to mitigate noise!).
Who it’s not for: Someone looking for tons of amenities. There is a restaurant/lounge as well as a rooftop bar for the warmer months and that’s it. Luckily, guests have access to the gym and indoor pool at the Marriott next door. For a spa, I’d recommend Gurney’s or The Bodhi Spa, which are both within a mile.
VIP amenities received by booking through Gusto: Priority for room upgrade, early check in and check out, and complimentary welcome amenity.
Castle Hill
Who it’s for: Those who want a relaxing stay with beach access. There are rooms in the main Inn that have a historic feel and then there are bright, private cottages located directly on the beach. If you don’t stay here, you should still visit for cocktails on their lawn overlooking the bay.
Pro Tip: This is a great property if you are looking to hold an event. I’ve been to beautiful weddings, baby showers, and birthday parties here and it never disappoints.
Who it’s not for: Those who want to be in a walkable location and plan to head into town multiple times a day. The property is about a 15 min drive from shops and restaurants and traffic and parking during peak season can be inconvenient.
VIP amenities received by booking through Gusto: Breakfast for 2, priority for room upgrade, early check in and check out, and complimentary welcome amenity.
Gurney’s Newport
Who it’s for: Those who prefer a resort feel with everything at their fingertips because this hotel has it all; an outdoor pool, spa, fitness center, kid’s camp, marina, and multiple places to eat and drink. The resort is located on Goat Island so to get into town take a 20 min scenic walk or the complimentary shuttle bus.
Who it’s not for: Someone who is a regular at Gurney’s Montauk and is looking for the exact same experience. This property changed hands several times without undergoing a complete room renovation so just be aware that that the rooms are not brand spanking new.
VIP amenities received by booking through Gusto: Priority for room upgrade, early check in and check out, and complimentary welcome amenity.
Hotel Viking
Who it’s for: Someone who wants to stay in a historical landmark and is not looking to break the bank. The hotel is located in the Bellevue area of town in a walkable location to all of Newport’s sights. The property was recently renovated and offers plenty of onsite amenities such as a spa, fitness center, indoor pool, rooftop bar, and garden restaurant.
Who it’s not for: Anyone who wants to stay on the waterfront or prefers boutique hotels (this property has over 200 guest rooms).
VIP amenities received by booking through Gusto: Priority for room upgrade, early check in and check out, and complimentary welcome amenity.
The Vanderbilt
Who it’s for: Someone looking for historic charm in a peaceful setting. The hotel has just 35 rooms and was built by the Vanderbilt family in the early 1900’s. It’s tucked away on a quiet street that is stone’s throw away from the waterfront and shops and restaurants of downtown Newport.
Who it’s not for: Someone looking for a waterfront property that is the life of the party. Stop by the rooftop bar for sunset and then continue on your way if you’re looking for a wild night.
Pro Tip: Room renovations begin February 2021. The hotel will remain open but book for the summer to avoid construction and take advantage of the new rooms.
VIP amenities received by booking through Gusto: $100 food and beverage credit, complimentary daily breakfast for 2, priority for room upgrade, early check in and check out, and complimentary welcome amenity.
